Cambridge Research Systems to sponsor OPAM keynote address

July 27, 2006
Dear OPAM community,

Cambridge Research Systems

We are happy to announce an exciting new arrangement between Cambridge Research Systems (www.crsltd.com) and OPAM (www.opam.net). CRS, which has long demonstrated a true commitment to advancing the quality of vision science, will be sponsoring this year's OPAM keynote address. In the years since OPAM's inception, the keynote address has become a foundation -- and one of the highlights -- of the meeting. The speakers have, without exception, demonstrated success in taking on big questions, challenging conventional wisdom, and breaking significant empirical ground in a variety of exciting ways. This year, with great enthusiasm, we will welcome Nancy Kanwisher.

CRS's generous sponsorship of the keynote will contribute to OPAM's ability to open its doors this year to everyone who wishes to attend, free of charge. Additionally, CRS will host the keynote address online. We are especially excited about this latter development, because OPAM strongly believes in using today's technology to efficiently and freely disseminate scientific ideas to the international research community. By enabling a feature of Microsoft Powerpoint, CRS will record the audio and the timing with which Nancy advances her slides, and then they will host the resulting audio/visual file in flash format. Those wishing to see a recent example are encouraged to view CRS's hosted file of David Brainard's talk from the 2006 Color Group meeting. One further reason why OPAM is excited about this arrangement relates to our primary mission, which is to heighten the visibility of outstanding young scientists who show a promising future in object cognition research. As OPAM has grown, our efforts to fulfill this mission have intensified and have met with quite tangible success (e.g., OPAM's agreement with Visual Cognition to publish summaries of the talk presentations). We view CRS's sponsorship and hosting of the talk as another firm step in the right direction, as the initial interest generated by the online talk will undoubtedly draw greater attention to OPAM's student and postdoc presentations as well.

OPAM 2006 continues to pick up steam, and we will be announcing more exciting news in the days and weeks ahead.

Warmest regards,
